The Skool of guitar excellence

RockSkool

PART 1: The opening riff repeats throughout the whole song. It is a great picking exercise and I recommend slow practice to get the notes and rhythm just right before rushing ahead.

Get into the habit of using alternate picking now and just repeat over and over until you get it just right....then (and only then) up the tempo!

PART 2: Kirk comes in with this part next....a simple bass line on the E string with the beginning of the "hook" that continues throughout the rest of the song.

Try to develop your palm muting here to get that nice "chunky" sound

PART 3: Now we simply develop the previous riff adding a "F" power chord and the beginning of the melody which builds up as the song continues.

I have only shown one bar but this phrase is played over many times so get used to repeating it a few times.

Again go slow, notice the notes all equal value to produce the solid rythm and keep the palm muting going as well to get the sound just right.
